Ryan Hutchison
Corporate Actions Administrator
Martin Currie Investment Management

Tell me about what you do?

I'm part of the market data team. I look after the corporate actions for the stock that we hold. What this means is that I make sure fund managers are aware of any corporate actions that are occurring such as a merger or a company's annual general meeting. The fund manager decides what action to take and then our team ensures that it is implemented. It's a fast paced environment which I enjoy.

Tell me how you've developed, particularly in your job?

After completing a business studies degree and taking a year out to travel, I joined Martin Currie. I attended a two-day induction course that covered everything from what hedge funds and derivatives are to how to use the computer systems.

Since then I've been on a settlements course in London and now I'm going to study for my Investment Administration Qualification.

I'm glad I am in this industry. It has made me a lot more confident, focused and aware of how the financial markets work.

What impact has this job had on your lifestyle?

I socialize quite a lot with the people I work with. It is a young team - my team leader is the same age as me and my manager is only 28.

How do you see your career progressing?

There is a clear career path here in terms of what you need to do to progress, and Martin Currie is also really flexible. I know people who have come into Investment Operations and moved into another role within the company, for example IT or dealing.

I like the fact that there is always the possibility that I could move into another area of the business.

What would you say to others considering a career in Investment Operations?

I would say that Investment Operations is a worthwhile career. You don't have to know anything about investments as the company will train you well. There are plenty of opportunities to develop if you have good office skills and are organised.
