Business Services Controller
The Royal Bank of Scotland - Trustee & Depositary Services

Tell me about the different roles you have had?

I joined Royal Bank of Scotland in 1994 as a Securities Associate and have had various roles in Custody Settlements, Tax and Trustee.

In 1999 I became a Trainer/Staff Coach and was responsible for the training of new entrants, the support of existing staff and the creation of training guides and materials. Thereafter I progressed to Technical Associate (Team leader). This was a client facing role requiring good technical knowledge and ability to work to tight deadlines, as well as the capability to lead a team of between 6 to 10 Securities Associates.

I have been in my current role as a Business Services Controller since 2004. In this role I am responsible for reviewing the work standards of the Technical and Securities Associates and for ensuring that the procedures and processes of the business adhere to FSA regulations and represent best practice.

What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?

First and foremost it's really important to me to have an interesting job and a good atmosphere to work in. What I find most rewarding is the investigation, problem solving and the daily variety. Every review we complete raises different issues to be solved making each one unique and interesting. I really enjoy that.

What impact has this job had on your lifestyle?

From a financial perspective, I have a staff mortgage, which is part of the benefits package we have here. We also get bonuses, performance related pay and profit sharing.  From a personal perspective, I have a 10 month old baby and have been very fortunate to be able to change from full to part time working.  This means I get to spend more time with the most important person in my life.

There is also a really good social side to working with RBS; we have Christmas Parties and a summer BBQ. The Royal Bank of Scotland has its own sports facilities such as tennis courts, a gymnasium and keep fit classes. We also have a large subsidised canteen which has theme days, which I enjoy.

What would you say to others about a career in Investment Operations?

I would tell them about the job security. A lot of my friends in West Lothian who left school at the same time as me have been through four or five jobs, most of them through redundancy. So I think the job security I have here would be important to them.  I would also tell them that RBS offers flexibility within roles to help you achieve a good work/life balance.
