Technical Associate - Risk Management
The Royal Bank of Scotland - Trustee & Depositary Services

What attracted you to a career in Investment Operations?

I joined straight from school and I was attracted to the Financial Sector because of the job security, the variety of jobs and the opportunities to progress - these were the main things for me.

Tell me about what you do?

I currently work as a Technical Associate within the Risk Management Team.  We monitor derivative transactions within a fund manager’s portfolio; we view daily broker statements, carry out exposure and value checks on the funds and ensure regulations are adhered too. I am responsible for a team of 3 members of staff and we fit in to an overall risk team of 10 staff.

How have you developed in your job?

I started out working in the Business Services Group and moved to the Risk Management Team 3 years ago. I have been on a lot of job specific training courses and feel I have developed a good knowledge of certain areas relating to derivatives. I was promoted to Technical Associate at the end of 2006 where I now have more responsibilities such as managing staff, reviewing / prioritising workloads as well as attending client meetings and external audits.

What impact has this job had on your lifestyle?

I have a good social life through work; we normally go out as a team at least once a month.  I also socialise out of work with other members of the department. We have excellent sports facilities including football pitches and a gym which I use regularly. It's a good job that you can learn about a lot of different areas from. There are good career opportunities in Investment Operations.
